Via Argentina is located in El Cangrejo and is one of the most cosmopolitan neighborhoods in Panama City.Having being founded in the 1950s by the local Jewish community. At the time, it was the most modern and exclusive neighborhood in Panama City. In time, the Jewish population mostly relocated to the Punta Pacifica and Costa del Este neighborhoods and El Cangrejo evolved to become more diverse attracting visitors and settlers from all over the world to become the melting pot it is today. Panama City is a very multicultural city and this diversity is more apparent in El Cangreyo than anywhere else with it`s epicenter being Via Argentina, where you can find a huge variety of restaurants from Spanish , Lebanese , Cuban, Caribbean, Venezuelan ,Panamanian, and a collection of fun bars with live music , karaoke and dancing to the late hours.
During the day there are Spanish schools, coffee shops and a beautiful park with basketball and football courts as well as an outdoor gym area , kids park and a dog training park. Taking a stroll along Via Argentina`s tree lined walk ways during day or night can be a truly Panamanian experience not to be missed.
The street itself is currently undergoing a much needed overhaul by the local government with an investment of over $20 million to renovate and upgrade the park and beautify and pedestrianize the street to make it into one of the major destination streets in Panama. This is being being done one block at a time with each block taking around 1.5 months to complete so for the next few months you can experience both the old and the new.
The main aim of the project is to modernize and revitalize the street while keeping it unique character intact and so far they are doing a pretty good job.
